Here, officials and horticulturists have transformed the expanse near the park’s recreational area – think snowboards and skiers – into a great example of how South Dakota looked for thousands of years.“Garden Line” will visit with Loren Beard, the Sioux Falls Park Maintenance District Supervisor for Great Bear Recreation Park, and Matt Hart, the park service official who took charge of this plan. Anglers are using crankbaits and crawlers and there are limits coming in but you have to look for the fish with a different bite each day. Smallmouth are also biting in this area.In the Platte area fishing is picking up! Anglers are having good luck south of the bridge around Platte Creek, pulling plugs over submerged trees. Best depth is 35-45 feet. Stabilization work on the 54-year old building is complete, and contractors are now finishing roofing work on the entire chapel.The chapel’s foundation has settled by nine inches at the northeast corner of the building, due to a deep vein of weak soil. From inside, the drop is apparent by a sloping floor and some separation between the walls at the inside northeast corner. Surveyors also noted that the chapel’s steeple leans to the north.Tom Thomas, safety supervisor at St. Joseph’s, said the settling was documented over the past 10 years, but it was time to fix it before the chapel was damaged any further.To stop the settling and prevent further damage, engineers devised a plan that involved stainless steel pipes to be pushed into the ground and then attached to the chapel’s foundation.Work to install the pipes began June 9 and finished July 6. Rounds Asks For Flags Fly at Half Staff on Saturday to Honor Former Legislator Hemming Oien PIERRE, S.D. – Gov. Mike Rounds asks that all flags in the state be flown at half staff on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010, from 8:00 a.m. until sunset, in honor of former South Dakota State Representative Hemming Oien, of Sioux Falls, who died Aug. 19. “Dr. Oien was a distinguished legislator who served his district with pride for 10 years,” Gov. Rounds said. “We extend our condolences to his family.” Hemming Oien served from 1979-1988 in the South Dakota House of Representatives. A memorial service for Dr. Oien will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 10:30 a.m. CDT at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at 909 W. 33rd Street. A private family burial will precede the memorial service.
